History
Andorra’s history can be traced back to Medieval Europe when the Bishop of Urgell was given the Andorran Valleys in exchange for land. Since then Andorra has retained close ties with Spain and France. During World War I, Andorra declared war on Germany but were not involved in any fighting. During the Spanish Civil War a French military garrison was established in Andorra for protection from the Spanish. During World War II, Andorra remained neutral but it was very important for smuggling food, weapons and people between France and Spain.
